Seizure Training Acknowledgment

Many of our consumers have seizure monitoring protocols in place due to either having active seizure occurrences or a history of seizures.

Due to this reason, BIS wants to remind all employees of safety precautions that should be utilized when a consumer is taking a shower or bath. Please encourage all supported individuals to with a seizure history to take a shower. It takes very little water to drown, so a seizure while taking a bath can be fatal. If the consumer insists on taking a bath, then staff need to be present in the bathroom at all times.

If the consumer states they do not want staff in the bathroom due to privacy reasons, staff should reach out the ISL Manager so the matter can be discussed with the consumer’s guardian. If needed, Due Process will be sought.

Until that time, any consumer who does not wish to have their staff in the bathroom while taking a bath, will have staff sit just outside the bathroom door. Staff will verbally ask the client if they’re okay every 5 minutes. At the first sign of any distress, staff will enter the bathroom to ensure the safety of the consumer. During a shower, staff will check on the consumer every 10 minutes.

In addition, all staff will take vital signs after a seizure every 15 minutes for an hour and document the results. Vital signs should include blood pressure, pulse, and respirations. Observations should be recorded on the provided seizure log. Staff will also provide detailed documentation about a consumer’s appearance and demeanor after a seizure. As soon as possible, staff should notify the ISL Manager.

In a medical emergency and/or life-threatening situation, 911 should be called first then the ISL Director.
