Classes and Social Skills Opportunities

At BIS we have an ever evolving calendar of socialization and community integration opportunities for our clients and any member of the community wishing to participate. The majority of the opportunities are free of charge and those that are not are very affordable. Each activity provides the opportunity for social skills development, community integration, peer interaction, and most importantly a great time! All upcoming events will be listed on the calendar under the Client Events section of our site, but below you will find a list of our established groups.

  • BIS Summer, Holiday and Spring Break Camp – At BIS there is a camp for everyone! Please click on the links below to find enrollment forms and specifics for each of our upcoming camps! Don’t forget to visit the Client Events tab to see what exciting opportunities we have coming up!

  • BIS Glee Club – Every Thursday from 12:30p-1:30p the BIS office is rockin’ and rollin’ to the sounds of Journey, Pat Benatar and Bon Jovi, just to name a few! Participants and staff break out the tambourines, microphones and air guitars and rock out to their favorite songs. This free, weekly gathering provides a great opportunity for self expression, reciprocal interaction and sensory input.  All are welcome to attend but participants must be accompanied by staff.

  • BIS Art Club – Have a creative side? Want to find out how to use it? Check the Client Events section of the website to find dates for the next BIS Art Club. Participants pay a one time $25 fee for 8 weeks of painting, sculpting, gluing and creating a new one of a kind masterpiece each week!

  • Fun with Fitness – From the expert on sports to the kid with two left feet, all will have a blast at Fun with Fitness! This free 8 week class teaches everything from the basics of team sports to the building blocks of proper nutrition. All activities are modified to meet the needs of each participant and the core of each class is teamwork, fitness and self esteem! All are welcome to attend but participants must be accompanied by a family member or staff member at all times.   • Guys and Girls Nights – Movies, Music, Pottery, BBQ, the list goes on and on! If your interested in it, it is probably on the list of activities to be enjoyed at Guys and Girls Night. This free bi-weekly event is a wonderful opportunity for guys or girls of any age to hang out with friends and shared common interests. Through a mixture of group activities, community outings and facilitated interactions participants learn valuable social skills in a safe and fun environment!   • Social Skills Groups – Through the use of movement, game play, activities and music, children from 3-18 learn valuable social skills and make life long friends! For Summer 2011 there will be four sessions of Social Skills classes each lasting three weeks. Classes are led by Anne Kraus. Anne has a Masters of Education in Counseling and is currently working as a Counselor here at BIS. Please email Anne at akraus@behaviorinterventionservices or call 314-395-9375 ext 129 for further information about a Social Skills Group for your child or loved one.

  • SHAPE (Sex, Health, Advocacy, Prevention and Education) – A five week class for individuals 13 and over with Aspergers or High Functioning Autism. This class will focus on important issue surrounding health, safety, emotions and advocacy as they relate to sex and sexuality. This will be a safe and candid environment where individuals will learn about their body functions, the changes that have or will occur and how to manage these issues. This will also be a place to individuals to identify and understand partners feelings as well as their own.

Sign up now to participate in the Washer Tournament to benefit Action for Autism, hosted by Behavior Intervention Services at Tiemeyer Park on May 19th!
